Why SMH Academy?
Mission Statement
“SMH Academy exists to provide young adults experiencing psychiatric illness with residential care that combines clinical treatment, life-skills development, and structured support during the transition from adolescence to independent adulthood. We are grounded in respect — for our environment, for ourselves, and for one another. We believe that meaningful growth and change is not only possible, but necessary.”
We believe healing happens across every part of a person, so our care reaches beyond the therapy room into the rhythms of daily life: the food someone eats, the sleep they get, the way they move their body, the space they live in, and the community around them. Individual therapy and medication management, when appropriate, are woven into that same fabric of care.
Everything we do is rooted in integrity — we do what's right for each resident, even when it's the harder path. We show up authentically, and we hold space for residents to do the same. We believe deeply in each person's right to make their own choices, and we build care around who someone is, not a fixed script. There's no judgment here, only encouragement, because we know real growth happens at each person's own pace.
Our Core Values
We Lead With Integrity
We hold ourselves accountable to the same standard we ask of our residents. Doing right by someone doesn't stop being right just because it's hard — so we do what's right, even when it's the harder path.
Growth at Their Own Pace
Healing doesn't run on a schedule. We measure progress against a person's own trajectory, not against anyone else's, and we stay patient through the pace that requires.
Residents are worth knowing as they truly are, not as a version of themselves shaped for approval. We create space for people to show up genuinely, and we do the same in return.
Authenticity Over Performance
Encouragement, Never Judgment
People are doing the best they can with what they have right now. We respond with support instead of shame, and we hold hope even in moments when someone can't hold it for themselves.
Autonomy Is Respected
No one else can live someone's life for them. We support informed choice and treat independence as something to be built up, not taken away.
Care Focused on the Person
No two journeys look the same. We meet each person where they are, not where a program timeline says they should be, and we shape care around the individual rather than the other way around.
Why Families Choose Us
-
While who will be providing treatment is the most important factor in choosing a program, the second most important consideration is who your loved one will be in treatment alongside.
One of the greatest fears for residents and their families is entering treatment only to encounter bullying, exploitation, or exposure to more destructive behaviors from others with serious conduct or emotional health concerns.
For this reason, SMH Academy maintains a rigorous admissions screening process. We do not accept referrals from the criminal justice system, individuals with gang affiliations, histories of violence, fire-setting, sexual offending, or anyone whose presence might compromise the physical or emotional safety of the program. While every individual deserves access to quality treatment, protecting the therapeutic milieu for those we serve remains essential.
-
At SMH Academy, we believe the only responsible and effective way to treat young adults is by addressing the emotional underpinnings of problematic behaviors. When a resident is struggling with substance use, disordered eating, self-harm, or other behavioral challenges, these issues are most often negative coping strategies in disguise. Young adults frequently turn to drugs or alcohol to self-medicate, or engage in other destructive behaviors, as a way to avoid anxiety, depression, or other underlying emotional health issues. Programs that focus on behavior alone miss the opportunity to treat the actual root cause of a resident's difficulties.
A substantial body of research indicates that when the root cause of a behavioral issue goes unaddressed, the issue tends to re-emerge after treatment or to be replaced by a new negative coping strategy.
-
At SMH Academy, we believe that treatment built on empowering our residents is the cornerstone of effective, lasting results. Too often, treatment programs are built on rigid directives and the belief that treatment means breaking people down. We believe our job is to lift residents up, build on their strengths, and help them find real value in approaching their lives differently.
This philosophy carries through every part of our program, from therapy to psychiatric management to daily coaching. Treatment that simply has residents behave as they are told misses the opportunity to identify and understand the fundamental issues behind outward behavior. Each treatment modality a resident engages with is designed to build their ability to identify, choose, and direct the course of their own life in a healthy way.
Research supports what we have long observed in practice: real, sustainable, internalized change is best achieved through the empowerment of residents and, when appropriate, their families or support systems.
-
For families or residents entering treatment without a current diagnosis, SMH Academy offers comprehensive diagnostic testing as part of the intake process to establish an accurate clinical picture and guide individualized treatment planning.

At SMH Academy, we are uniquely positioned to help residents meet their academic and vocational goals. Upon admission, each resident completes an educational assessment designed to identify their academic needs, goals, and abilities. When appropriate, and with the resident's consent, our academic coordinator communicates directly with a resident's college, university, or high school to coordinate coursework, collect assignments, and return completed work for grading. When required, we can also provide proctored testing.
Our location offers a distinct advantage for residents pursuing higher education. Boise State University is approximately six miles from our home, and the Boise area is also home to the College of Western Idaho and other local community college options, making it possible for residents to continue coursework, explore enrollment, or visit campuses while in treatment.
The academic needs of residents at SMH Academy vary widely. We support residents who are excelling in college coursework as well as those who have not yet completed a high school diploma or equivalent. For residents who are not currently enrolled anywhere, we can help identify pathways to earn a GED or transferable credit, assist in exploring enrollment at a local college or university, or provide support in preparing for college entrance exams. Our small size, high staff-to-resident ratio, and range of resources allow us to meet each resident's unique academic needs.
-
At SMH Academy, treatment works best as a partnership. Our clinical team brings expertise in mental health and behavioral care, but residents and their families bring something we can't replicate: a lifetime of knowing themselves. Nobody understands a resident's strengths, interests, and challenges better than the resident does. That's why treatment planning here isn't something done to a resident, it's built together, with residents actively shaping their own plan of care from day one.
That same collaborative approach extends beyond our walls. If a resident already has a therapist, physician, mentor, coach, or academic advisor they trust, we see real value in staying connected to that relationship rather than starting over. With the resident's consent, our team will coordinate directly with the people already invested in their well-being. In our experience, this kind of continuity tends to move treatment forward faster and makes the return to everyday life considerably less jarring.
